Background

The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (APFC) is a state-owned entity responsible for managing the Alaska Permanent Fund, a sovereign wealth fund established in 1976 to preserve a portion of the state’s oil and mineral revenues for the benefit of generations of Alaskans.

Funded primarily through oil royalties and mineral lease revenues, the Permanent Fund has grown into the largest sovereign wealth funds in the United States, with over $83 billion in assets as of June 2025. The staff of APFC oversees a globally diversified investment portfolio that includes public equities, fixed income, private equity, real estate, infrastructure, and other alternative investments.

A defining feature of the fund is the annual Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which distributes a portion of the fund’s earnings directly to eligible Alaska residents. The APFC operates independently from the rest of the state government, with a mission to maximize long-term returns while protecting the fund’s principal for future generations.

Challenge

Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation’s (APFC) faces scrutiny in-state due to increased magnification in local media. To address this, Gregory was engaged to develop a strategic plan aimed at elevating APFC’s presence in national financial media, providing positive, third-party validation beyond state lines. The objective was to position the APFC team as credible and authoritative voices in the broader financial landscape. In addition to national media outreach, Gregory collaborates closely with APFC and its in-state public relations firm to draft press releases and provide strategic counsel around the Board of Trustees’ quarterly meetings.

Solution

Gregory executed a comprehensive media relations strategy to elevate the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation’s (APFC) national profile and strengthen its communications with key stakeholders. The program included media training for senior leadership, proactive pitching to top-tier financial and trade outlets, and consistent promotion of board meetings and corporate developments. The team developed thought leadership content for APFC’s website, managed social media messaging, and provided ongoing strategic counsel and media operations support. By navigating the complexities of Alaska’s political landscape, managing sensitive media situations, and fostering trusted relationships with reporters, Gregory helped position APFC as a credible, transparent, and influential voice in public sector finance.

Results

Gregory has consistently and strategically elevated APFC’s media presence, significantly increasing awareness of the firm on a national scale. Through ongoing, proactive media outreach grounded in timely and relevant insights, APFC has been successfully positioned as a respected authority within the investment and public fund sectors.
